In 1993, Mormon feminist scholar Maxine Hanks, editor of Women and Authority: Re-emerging Mormon Feminism, was excommunicated for her controversial writings on Mormon theology and the role of women in the LDS church. A member of one of the oldest Mormon families, she is forbidden to enter the Temple.
